Abstract:
Sago plant (Metroxylon Sago Rottb) is well-known as useful plant by Poom community becauses it has significant number of uses. Sago plant contains carbohyrate that benefit as food sources, other part such as bark as house floor, leaf for the roof and frond for the house wall. Various benefits of sago plant (Metroxylon Sago Rottb) have shown that it plays a crucial role in the life of Poom community thus cultivation efforts have been done in accordance with local knowledge to ensure the availability of sago plant. The research aims to identify the local knowledge of Poom community in sago cultivation, using descriptive method with structural interview and field observation tecniques. The result showed that Poom community has been practing sago cultivation for generation. Sago cultivation is conductedt through vegetative propagation using sago sucker which is located in the sago trunk (known as aerial sucker) and on the ground (basal ground sucker). The criteria of tree parent is sago plants that have hig production of starch and or sago plant that will be harvested, for each tree parent it was taken 2-3 suckers as seedling to be planted. Planting site of sago seedling is on swamp area and close to water source. In conlusion, the local knowledge on sago cultivation kept by older people. Transfer of knowledge is by involving family member on the cultivation practices.
