The Arfak Mountains Natural Reserve (CAPA), which is located in the Bird's Head Peninsula region of West Papua, Indonesia, covered about 45,000 km2 . The area is located in the three different administrative areas, including Manokwari, Manokwari Selatan and Pegunungan Arfak regencies. The Sigim and Sinaitousi villages are occupied by indigenous Papuans who are living in the buffer zone, where adjoin the CAPA area. In recent years, the population of the villages is growing rapidly. In addition the growth is not balanced, compared to the family welfare as well as their crucial necessity in life, especially for education and health expenditure. This situation has encouraged people who are living close to the CAPA to destroy the forest in order to survive. There are number of factors to make it happens, (1) public interest in the CAPA area, (2) the economic condition of people who live in the CAPA area are insufficient, (3) lack of cooperation in the activities between the society, the government and the NGO’s, (4) lack of supervision from the government official or agent of change. There is an effort, as the idea, to cope with the problems to use the participatory socio-cultural approach using the method of science and technology transfer such as the training and mentoring to increase the production of native chickens. The main effort of this study is a multifunction incubator model. The result of this work is to increase the capability of people in managing the native chicken as well as to increase the production. |
